In this essay I will discuss sentences as <\/span><em>secondary truth bearers<\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-style: normal;\" lang=\"en-US\">Pragmatic value<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">I can see that it has some pragmatic value to say that sentences are also sometimes true\/false <\/span><em>in addition <\/em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">to propositions. The pragmatic value is that it makes it easier to talk about certain things without having to use complex phrases like &#8220;the proposition expressed by (the sentence) is true (or false)&#8221;. Perhaps this is a good enough reason to posit that sentences also in some cases have the properties true\/false. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm; font-style: normal;\">An alternative solution is to invent some shorthands for talking about propositions expressed. See (N. Swartz, R. Bradley, 1979).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-style: normal;\" lang=\"en-US\">Parsimony<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">The problem I see with it is that of parsimony. \u201cE<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">ntities must not be multiplied beyond necessity\u201d (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Occam%27s_Razor\">Wiki<\/a>).<\/span><span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> Is that not exactly what we are doing? At least if properties are entities. I think they are since entity is the most inclusive set (similar to \u201cthing\u201d)<a name=\"sdfootnote1anc\" href=\"#sdfootnote1sym\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>. But perhaps it is not as problematic to multiply properties as it is to multiply other kinds of entities in an explanation. I don&#8217;t know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-style: normal;\" lang=\"en-US\">What are the conditions for a sentence being true\/false?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">This is how I see understand the position:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-left: 1.25cm; margin-bottom: 0cm;\">A sentence is true iff it expresses exactly one proposition and that proposition is true.<br \/>\nA sentence is false iff it expresses exactly one proposition and that proposition is false.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">The phrase \u201c expresses exactly one proposition\u201d seems to avoid the ambiguity problem that I <a href=\"http:\/\/emilkirkegaard.dk\/en\/?p=1887\">wrote about earlier.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Notes<br \/>\n<\/span><\/h3>\n<div id=\"sdfootnote1\">\n<p><a name=\"sdfootnote1sym\" href=\"#sdfootnote1anc\">1<\/a>Yes, \tI am aware of Russell&#8217;s paradox that may arise when defining sets \tlike this.
