Papierno)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/emilkirkegaard.dk\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/The-rhetoric-and-reality-of-gap-closing\u2014when-the-\u201chave-nots\u201d-gain-but-the-\u201chaves\u201d-gain-even-more..pdf\">The rhetoric and reality of gap closing\u2014when the \u201chave-nots\u201d gain but the \u201chaves\u201d gain even more.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Abstract<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">Many forms of intervention, across different domains, have<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">the surprising effect of widening preexisting gaps between<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">disadvantaged youth and their advantaged counter-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">parts\u2014if such interventions are made available to all stu-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">dents, not just to the disadvantaged. Whether this widening<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">of gaps is incongruent with American interests and values<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">requires an awareness of this gap-widening potential when<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">interventions are universalized and a national policy that<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">addresses the psychological, political, economic, and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">moral dimensions of elevating the top students\u2014tomor-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">row\u2019s business and science leaders\u2014and\/or elevating the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">bottom students to redress past inequalities and reduce the<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #993300;\">future costs associated with them.
