This anxiety<br \/>\nis fed by scienti\ufb01c theories whose cornerstone is the assess-<br \/>\nment of these experiences as necessarily harmful, due to their<br \/>\npresumed serious consequences for the present and future<br \/>\nlives of the minors involved in them. This principle, widely<br \/>\nheld by experts and laypersons alike,was also part and parcel<br \/>\nof the danger presumably posed by Onanism, a phenomenon<br \/>\nwhich occupied a similar position in society and medical<br \/>\nscience in the West during the eighteenth through twentieth<br \/>\ncenturies. The present work is a comparative review of these<br \/>\ntwo hypotheses and the central objective was to compare the<br \/>\nevolution and fundamental elements of the two hypotheses<br \/>\nin light of what history tells us about Onanism theory.
