As you probably know, Noah Carl was attacked by the Red Guards at his Cambridge job. Eventually, the college ended up firing him after months of harassment. This firing is probably in violation of UK laws, so Noah is preparing a lawsuit against the college. This kind of thing is important because, as he notes:

But petitions and newspaper articles aren’t enough. If we want to safeguard academic freedom, and freedom of speech more generally, we need to start imposing real, material costs on the institutions that buckle under activists’ pressure.

The recent case of Oberlin college being fined 44 million USD is exactly the sort of monetary penalty that needs to happen, something college administrators can understand. In fact, one should fine or withdraw public funding from all colleges that fail to uphold long standing academic principles of academic freedom and freedom of speech.
